Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Union (FADWU) is the only registered trade union federation of domestic workers in Hong Kong organizing both migrant and local domestic workers.

Migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong are suffering from the discriminatory laws and policies that exclude domestic workers from the same treatment as any other workers.

We are 24 hours on-call, forced to work long hours without enough rest or sleep because we are required to work and live with employers behind closed doors. There is no statutory working hour or labour inspection to protect our rights. We are constantly hungry because many employers flout the contract and don’t provide us food or food allowance. Even if we are sick, we are forced to work for the fear of losing jobs. If we lose jobs, we need to pay a huge amount of recruitment fee to find new employment even though it is illegal. Most of the time, we find labour and discrimination laws fail to protect our rights. We are treated like slaves and robots, but not like humans.

Without domestic workers, the society will not be functioning. Domestic workers contribute enormously to the city’s economy but we are severely underpaid. Under the current minimum wage, domestic workers are paid HK$7.8 per hour compared to the statutory minimum wage of HK$40 per hour, and median hourly wage of $77.4. This is slave wage, this is discrimination!

We demand to be recognized, respected and treated equally as any other workers. We demand domestic workers be paid by the living wage of the destination country so we can live a decent life. We are outraged by the saying that migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong are satisfied with our situation. We are workers, not slaves! We condemn any action that abuses migrant domestic workers’ disadvantaged situation in Hong Kong to justify exploitation of domestic workers in any other part of the world. Domestic workers globally should stand together and fight for our rights! Fight! Fight! Fight!

홍콩아시아가사노동조합연맹(FADWU)은 이주노동자와 현지 내국인 노동자를 모두 조직하는 홍콩 유일의 등록 가사 노동자 연맹입니다. 홍콩의 이주 가사 노동자들은 여느 노동자들과 동등한 대우로부터 가사 노동자들을 배제하는 차별적인 법과 정책으로 인해 어려움을 겪고 있습니다.

우리는 고용주 집에서 일하고 살아야 하기 때문에 24시간 대기해야 하고, 충분한 휴식이나 잠을 자지 못하고 장시간 노동을 해야 합니다. 우리의 권리를 보호하기 위한 법정 근로 시간이나 근로 감독은 없습니다. 많은 고용주들이 계약을 어기고, 우리에게 음식이나 식대를 제공하지 않기 때문에 우리는 계속 배가 고픕니다. 우리는 아파도 일자리를 잃을 것을 우려하여 일을 하지 않을 수 없습니다. 만약 우리가 일자리를 잃는다면, 그것이 불법임에도 불구하고 우리는 새로운 일자리를 찾기 위해 막대한 중개 수수료를 지불해야 합니다. 대부분의 경우, 노동법과 차별금지법은 우리의 권리를 보호해 주지 못합니다. 우리는 인간이 아니라 노예와 로봇처럼 취급당하고 있습니다.

가사 노동자들이 없다면, 그 사회는 제 기능을 하지 못할 것입니다. 가사 노동자들은 홍콩의 경제에 엄청난 기여를 하지만, 우리는 심각한 저임금을 받고 있습니다. 현행 법정최저임금은 시간당 40홍콩달러이고, 시간당 평균 임금은 77.4홍콩 달러입니다. 그렇지만 이주가사노동자들은 현재 최저임금 하에서 시간당 실질적으로 7.8홍콩 달러 밖에 받지 못합니다. 이것은 노예 임금입니다, 이것은 차별입니다!

우리는 다른 노동자들과 동등하게 인정받고, 존중받고, 대우받을 것을 요구합니다. 우리는 가사노동자들이 인간다운 삶을 살 수 있도록 해당 국가의 생활임금을 지불할 것을 요구합니다. 우리는 홍콩의 이주 가사 노동자들이 우리의 상황에 만족한다는 말에 격분합니다. 우리는 노예가 아니라 노동자입니다! 우리는 홍콩 이주가사노동자들의 불리한 상황을 악용하여 전세계 다른 지역의 가사노동자 착취를 정당화하는 모든 행위를 규탄합니다. 전 세계 가사 노동자들은 함께 뭉쳐 우리의 권리를 위해 싸워야 합니다! 파이팅! 파이팅! 파이팅!
